How do I help my children to get the best possible grade?
Support them as best you can .....
1. Help them rehearse and practise to make learning stick. Borrow their core and powerful knowledge grids and test them - you'll learn too... and understand the challenge of trying to remember everything. Try the 'five times' principal. You have to hear it/see it/rehearse it five times, spaced over a period of time. Day 1, Day 3, Day 7, Day 14, Day 28. Once it has stuck, get them answering questions and APPLYING their knowledge.
2. Check they are doing homework. Homework will be listed on the homework portal (Google Classroom)
3. Ask to see their exercise books to see what they are working on and what the teacher feedback is saying about progress (WWW) and how to move their work forward (EBI).
4. Know which exam board they will be sitting and what the expectations are. For us it is OCR B GCSE. There are three exam papers.
5a. Revision IS: making flashcards, doing quizzes, answering practice questions
5b. Revision ISN'T: just highlighting and re-writing notes for hours on end. Our brains are easily fooled that we know the stuff, plus pupils need to know which knowledge matches to which question.
6. Don't allow gadget/gaming/phone access two hours before bed-time.
7. Make sure they go to bed at a reasonable hour.
8. Feed and water them regularly.
9. Contact the class teacher.
10. Stay patient.... you CAN do this :-)
